Clare Mackintosh; Author headshot
Author Clare Mackintosh.
Clare Mackintosh is an award winning author. Her books have together spent 64 weeks in the Sunday Times bestseller list, and are published in over 40 countries. I have taken a headshot of and for Clare many times before, and it is always a joy to catch up with her.
Her first novel ‘I Let You Go’ was published in 2015. Since then she has written six more bestsellers; thrillers, detective novels, memoirs. Clare commissioned me to take her publicity images for a new book to be published next year. She needed a headshot and wanted a full length portrait. This is a very different book requiring a quite different approach. I have photographed Clare many times before, latterly for social media wearing a leather jacket, see below, which worked well for crime fiction.
This is a non-fiction book about grief entitled; “I promise it won’t always hurt like this”, written 18 years after the death of her son. This is a poignant, but positive guide to a parent’s grief, offering a ray of hope – or relief, perhaps – to other parents living a similar experience.
A studio shot would be too cold, an outside portrait would be best. We decided the location would be the same building that we used last time because the stones ‘give[…] a lovely gentle warmth’ to quote Clare. We produced a number of different portrait options; headshots for social media and hopefully for the dust jacket with different formats and colours. Actual uses and final decisions remain with the publisher, as always.
